Understanding Crime Zones & Staying Safe

The colour-coded Crime Zone overlay helps you identify areas with higher or lower levels of reported crime. While this data provides useful guidance, safety can vary by time of day, environment, and personal circumstance. We encourage you to use this as one of several tools in making informed choices.

🚦 What the Colours Mean

- 🟢 Low Crime Area – Safer to work, study, and commute, especially during daytime hours.
- 🟡 Moderate Crime Area – Use basic precautions, especially at night or in quiet areas.
- 🔴 High Crime Area – Be vigilant, avoid late-night work if possible, and use well-lit routes.

🧭 Practical Safety Tips for Gig Workers & Students

- Use Trusted Navigation Apps (e.g., Google Maps, Citymapper) to find well-lit, busy routes.
- Buddy System: Let a friend know your route or work shift, especially in new areas.
- Emergency Contacts: Save 000 (police/fire/ambulance) in your phone; use SOS features on your device.
- Portable Charger: Always keep your phone charged while working or commuting.
- Local Police Stations: Know your nearest police station — you can find these via VicPol.
